Eligibility

Students who are 15 1/2 years of age or older and under 19 years of age are eligible to enroll. Students must have a current Hawaii instructional permit.

Program Requirements

  1. 40 hours of in person classroom instruction
  2. 6-7 hours of behind-the-wheel (BTW) driving instruction
  3. 6-12 hours of BTW observation

Certification

This is a non-credit, after school course. Certificates of completion are awarded for the classroom and behind-the-wheel instruction. The student's permanent transcript record will show satisfactory completion of the course. This course alone does not qualify the student for a driver's license.

Class Selection

Applications for each class session are available  for download during a given week on the Leilehua High School and Leilehua Driver Ed websites. Completed applications will be due with a readable, xeroxed copy of the student's Hawaii instructional permit on ONE DAY only. Each application is numbered in the order it is received and a random lottery drawing of numbers by an administrator will determine which student applicants are enrolled in the class session. For the fall session, 30 students + 4 alternates will be selected and for the winter session, 30 students will be selected. This random selection of students prevents preferential treatment. Students selected for this class session will be notified by email that day.

Class Schedule

Classroom instruction periods will be on Monday, Tuesday and Thursdays from 2:45 - 4:15 pm. BTW instruction will be based on a schedule agreed upon by both students and BTW instructor. Selected students for a session must adhere to the program schedule and have 100% attendance for both classroom and BTW instruction. Absences will subject the student to be dropped from the program.

Class Fee

A $10 course will be due by the first day of the class session. Once the class session starts, all fees are non-refundable.

Student-Parent Obligation

Students are expected to practice driving skills under the supervision of parents. It is recommended that students practice the skills learned from the BTW sessions.
